Cupping

Experience improved circulation and pain relief through cupping. This traditional technique helps release muscle tension and promote faster healing. It also supports relaxation and overall body balance.

What Is Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is an ancient therapeutic technique that has been practiced for thousands of years across Middle Eastern, Chinese, and Egyptian cultures. Today, it is widely used in modern physical therapy and sports medicine as an effective tool for relieving muscle tension, improving circulation, and accelerating tissue recovery.

The technique involves placing specially designed cups on the skin and creating a vacuum — either through heat or a mechanical pump — that gently lifts the underlying soft tissue. This negative pressure effect decompresses the fascia and muscle layers, promoting blood flow, releasing tightness, and stimulating the body's natural healing response.

Types of Cupping We Offer

  • Dry Cupping: The most common form, where cups are placed on the skin and suction is applied to lift the tissue. Highly effective for muscle tightness, fascial restrictions, and localized pain.

  • Sliding Cupping: Oil is applied to the skin and cups are moved across the surface in a gliding motion. This technique acts as a deep tissue massage, covering larger muscle groups and improving overall circulation.

  • Flash Cupping: Cups are rapidly applied and removed in quick succession to stimulate circulation and awaken the nervous system. Often used for respiratory conditions and general fatigue.

  • Wet Cupping (Hijama): A traditional method involving controlled superficial skin preparation followed by cupping to draw out a small amount of blood. Believed to remove toxins and promote systemic balance.

How It Works

When suction is applied, the negative pressure created beneath the cup draws blood to the surface and into the underlying tissue. This triggers a series of therapeutic responses:

  • Fresh, oxygen-rich blood floods the area, nourishing damaged tissue and accelerating repair

  • Metabolic waste products and toxins are drawn away from congested areas

  • The fascia and connective tissue are decompressed, restoring mobility and reducing stiffness

  • The nervous system responds to the stimulation by reducing pain signals and promoting relaxation

  • Lymphatic drainage is enhanced, reducing swelling and supporting immune function

Conditions We Treat with Cupping

Cupping therapy is effective for a broad range of conditions, including:

  • Upper and lower back pain and muscle tightness

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Sciatica and hip pain

  • Sports injuries and muscle fatigue

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes

  • Poor circulation and lymphatic congestion

  • Stress, anxiety, and tension-related conditions

  • Post-exercise recovery and muscle soreness

Cupping and the Marks It Leaves

One of the most common concerns patients have is about the circular marks left by cupping. It is important to understand that these marks are a completely normal and expected outcome of the treatment. They indicate areas of stagnation, poor circulation, or muscle tension — and their color can provide useful clinical information:

  • Light pink — healthy tissue with good circulation

  • Dark red or purple — areas of significant stagnation or chronic tension

  • Brown — older stagnation or long-standing restriction

The marks are painless and typically disappear within a few days without any special care.

Is cupping painful?
Cupping is generally well-tolerated and many patients find it deeply relaxing. You may feel a strong pulling sensation during the session, but this should not be painful. Your therapist will always adjust the suction level to your comfort.

How long do the marks last?
The circular marks typically fade within three to seven days. The darker the mark, the longer it may take to disappear — but they are harmless and require no treatment.

How many sessions will I need?
Some patients experience significant relief after a single session. For chronic conditions, a series of sessions spaced appropriately apart is usually recommended. Your therapist will advise you based on your specific needs.

Can cupping be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it is often most effective when combined with manual therapy, dry needling, or therapeutic exercise. At our center, cupping is frequently integrated into a broader treatment plan for optimal results.

Who should avoid cupping?
Cupping is not recommended over broken or inflamed skin, varicose veins, bony prominences, or in areas of active injury. It is also avoided during pregnancy over the abdomen and lower back. Patients with bleeding disorders or those on blood thinners should consult their physician before treatment.
